The Upsi Rating System, released for season 2024, is designed to enhance your disc golf experience! The system uses AI technology to calculate ratings for players. Our unique approach is based on mapping the difficulty level of the layouts and measure your performance against them. This guide will explain how ratings are determined, how you can view them, and how to climb up that ladder to Upsi Star rating.
We're really proud of the system which has been in development for two seasons already. First in closed alpha 2022 we got promising results. Then in the summer 2023 we gave the prototype to be used for more people and learned a lot. This understanding has now be transformed into complete and high quality rating system for all Upsi users.
To receive a Upsi rating, you must have completed at least 10 rounds that meet the specific requirements for rated rounds. This minimum requirement ensures that the ratings are accurate and reflective of consistent gameplay. To form the rating maximum of latest 20 eligible rounds are included. Rating is not calculated for Guest Players.
Our ratings are calculated using an AI model. Round ratings are related to the difficulty of each course layout. For the first time ever this means comparable results on same layout between players even if they have never played the layout before.
For a round to contribute to your rating, it must:
Be individually scored so not doubles
Be played on a layout with determined difficulty level
Include at least two players
To have the typical characteristics of an actual round on that layout
Meet additional criteria confirming that the score accurately represents your performance
Your Upsi rating is dynamic and calculated from your recent playing history:
Last 20 qualifying rounds
minimum of 10 rounds required for any rating calculation
Statistical outliers are eliminated to ensure accuracy
this applies to those possible not too serious "fun runs"
but "too good rounds" too as well
Final rating is calculated based on the scores that remain after adjustments
Before starting a round, you can choose not to include it in the rating calculation. This decision applies to all players in that game. This allows flexibility in your playing choices and removes the need to "tryhard".
The ratings are updated at different times and in different cycles. However, all updates are always done in batches, so the rating values remain constant between update intervals.
A player's updated rating is calculated once a day (approximately 02:00 UTC) for all players who have played on the previous day (this means 00:00 - 23:59 UTC). In this way, the rating is consistent and always takes into account all performances made between update periods at once. An updated player rating is only calculated if new qualifying rounds have been played since the previous update.
Remember! The round needs to be uploaded, ended and meet all the criteria before the rating update starts. If it is not, it will not trigger a rating update. The game is not lost, but will be included in the next rating update if within the last 20 rounds played.
The Upsi rating compares the player's individual skill and performance to the difficulty of each layout. Once a month, the difficulty level is fine-tuned to ensure that it reflects the latest data and trends. New layouts are also graded as soon as enough data has been collected to ensure an accurate assessment. Layouts with less than 9 holes are never graded.
Rating Range:
Ratings range roughly between 900 and 2400 however there are no strict upper or lower limits
Interpretation:
In Upsi Rating a lower rating indicates a more skilled player, similar to ball golf. So player with rating 1062 has a better rating than player with 1243.
Unique System:
The Upsi rating is developed with a unique approach that doesn't conform to other rating systems (such as PDGA rating) out there. This innovative system is tailored specifically ensuring a true measure of a player's skill and adaptability on the course where ever and with whoever you play.
You can view your current rating at any time in the statistics view of the Upsi app. Note that the value is updated at most once every 24 h (see When rating is updated).
This section provides your current rating and your position in the ranking. There you can see how you stack up against your friends. You can access it through tapping on your ranking in statistics view. This innovative feature is the first in Upsi's history to offer you an objective way to compare your disc golf skills directly with your friends. Here, you’ll find your position on the ranking, giving you clear visibility into how you stack up against your friends. Use this feature to engage in friendly competition, set personal goals, and strategize on ways to improve your skills as you climb the ranks.
Upsi ratings are categorized into five classes, each with three levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Diamond, and Upsi Star. Each class and level come with unique badges displayed on your profile and front page, symbolizing your achievements and status.
Round Ratings give you an instant, data-driven score for each round so you can see exactly how the player performed absolutely and relative to their skill level. It includes the rating of that round and the star rating (1-5) compared to the player's skill level.
Above Expected (4-5 stars) if the player outperformed your skill level.
On Target (3 stars) when played as predicted by player current rating and the course’s difficulty.
Below Expected (1-2 stars) when the score was worse than the projected performance.
Round ratings are shown in score view for all rounds where rating is calculated and is available for Upsi Black subscribers.
At Upsi, we've leveraged data from past years to calculate ratings, ensuring every qualifying player begins with a rating that reflects their previous performances. This historical perspective offers a rich, comprehensive view of your growth and skill development over time, providing a solid foundation for tracking improvements.
It's important to note that once established, your historical rating remains unchanged. This means that even if you take over an account from a friend or upload scores from offline games from before the latest rating update, these changes will not retroactively alter past ratings. Instead, any new information will be incorporated into future rating calculations during the next update cycle, assuming that it is part of the influential set. This approach maintains the integrity and consistency of the historical data, ensuring that each player's rating trajectory accurately reflects their on-course actions over time.
The layouts with difficulty level can be identified by multiple means:
Remember that course layouts with fewer than 9 holes are never included in the calculation of difficulty.
It does not.
As of October 2024 this is not yet available but we are working on bringing this feature to the app soon!
For players with existing rating every rated round now includes a star score (1–5). As performances differ for different skill levels, the stars also adapt with the player's skill level.
